News from Domenic, author of RIOT ON SUNSET STRIP
08 November 2007

Venice tonight, Liverpool radio broadcast rescheduled for November 17

You may have noticed that on October 27, the interview about Riot on Sunset Strip: Rock 'n' Roll's Last Stand in Hollywood, did not appear on Spencer Leigh's BBC Radio Merseyside program "On The Beat". It was bumped to Saturday, November 17, 2007. The show will air at 6:30 p.m. (Greenwich Mean Time) on that day, so, in California, you can wake up on Saturday morning and hear it over tea from Liverpool at 10:30 a.m. (or, 1:30 p.m. in New York City). Spencer is the author of "Let's Go Down The Cavern," so he's someone well-qualified to talk about a music scene like the one on Sunset Strip during 1965/1966. Click one the link, for November 17:

Million Dollar Bash and Sid Griffin
02 November 2007

As you may know, musician/author/journalist/broadcaster/raconteur Sid Griffin has written our recently published and highly regarded Dylan tome. To promote the book the author will be taking a rather special show out on the road.

In my first blog it seems fitting to talk about this affable chap and the first of his "Basement Tapes" shows, which I was lucky enough to attend on Nov 1st at The Green Note in Camden. This intimate venue offers great veggie food (which admittedly I didn't try, but will do next time), organic lagers and an array of vodkas. The walls are covered with tasteful prints of '60s and '70s folk and rock icons and the place emits just the right amount of boho cool. It was the perfect venue for Sid's debut spoken word and songs show.

Hitting the small, subtly lit stage at 9PM Sid spoke with ease about his Basement Tape theories, interspersing key moments with snippets of the folk and blues tunes that Dylan was returning to whilst holed up in Woodstock. He held the audience's attention for the entire 45 mins, peppering the show with liberal amounts of humour. Sid certainly informed and entertained; a master of his craft. At 10:00 he returned for more songs and chat, including a number of Basement Tapes works, ending with a rousing version of The Long Ryders classic 'Looking For Lewis & Clark' (which references the "great Bob Dylan" ).

Special Brew
10 April 2007

Strange Brew, Christopher Hjort's comprehensive day-by-day account of the explosion of blues in Britain during the latter half of the 1960s, is now on sale, and has been reviewed strongly across the board. Mojo magazine notes that Strange Brew has been "meticulously compiled", and that it "not only looks good, but feels good to handle", concluding that the book is "an info-freak's dream".

Record Collector, meanwhile, describes the book as one "likely to be avidly consumed by all British blues acolytes". The Nashville City Paper commends the "real tales of an unforgettable cultural era" presented in "the most painstaking, thorough manner possible", while the website Curled Up With A Good Book declares: "Everything you ever wanted to know is here in Strange Brew. Everything you never knew is here. Anything worth knowing is here. Hjort is a hero and needs to be commended for tying together the branches."

Also on sale now are Metal: The Definitive Guide by Garry Sharpe-Young and Lennon And McCartney: Together Alone by John Blaney. Next up from Jawbone is Riot On Sunset Strip: Rock'n'Roll's Last Stand In Hollywood, set for publication in early June. Stay tuned for news of a bus tour of the LA hotspots detailed within, hosted by the author, Domenic Priore.

Jawbone: Sharp Books For Musical Minds
15 January 2007

The Outline Press of London, England, is pleased to announce the launch of its new imprint, Jawbone. Headed by Nigel Osborne (Publisher) and Tony Bacon (Editorial Director) - the brains behind best-selling Backbeat and Thunder Bay titles such as How To Write Songs On Guitar (75,000 copies sold), Beatles Gear (80,000 copies) and Totally Guitar (115,000 copies) - Jawbone brings together an international cast of writers, editors, designers and researchers dedicated to producing high quality books about popular culture and music.

The first Jawbone title, set for publication in February 2007, is Strange Brew: Eric Clapton And The British Blues Boom 1965 - 1970, a day-by-day account of the explosion of blues-derived music in the UK during the 1960s, with a foreword by John Mayall.

It will be followed, during the spring and early summer months, by Lennon And McCartney: Together Alone, a detailed account of the solo works by two of popular music's greatest writers and performers; Metal: The Definitive Guide, a comprehensive companion to the likes of Black Sabbath, Metallica and Judas Priest; with a foreword by Rob Halford; Piano Workbook, featuring hundreds of musical exercises in a wide variety of styles and advice on everything from songwriting to performance; and Riot On Sunset Strip: Rock'n'Roll's Last Stand In Hollywood, a startling evocation of artistic and social revolution in the mid 1960s.

Fall 2007 Jawbone titles will include Million Dollar Bash: Bob Dylan, The Band, And The Basement Tapes, the inside story on the legendary rustic recordings made by Dylan and his associates during the summer of 1967.

The Outline Press continues to produce books for both Backbeat and Thunder Bay. Forthcoming titles for 2007 include The Folk Handbook (Backbeat) and Totally Interactive Band Bible (Thunder Bay).
